William Leonard Roberts II, known by the American public as Rick Ross is a popular rapper and TV personality, who, like many other celebrities, enjoys visiting Greece.
His newest clip, “Santorini Greece” is part of his critically-acclaimed album Rather You Than Me. Granted, the “graphic” lyrics don’t suit what the iconic landscape of the Greek island may inspire, but the video will promote the image of Santorini abroad. “Santorini Greece, I put it on the map,” Ross says and the music plays softly in an odd contrast with the verses that will follow.
Directed by Ryan Snyder, the clip features the rapper in designer clothing, accompanied by sculptural women, and enjoying expensive Belaire Rose champagne, walking the streets of Oia, entering a church, and sailing into the sunset.
Rick Ross is not the only famous singer to shoot a clip on Santorini. In 2016, pop-star Justin Bieber featured Santorini in his clip for “Company.” The iconic Santorini sunset is depicted in this clip too.
Besides music videos, you will also notice Santorini in blockbuster movies like Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, American romantic comedy film Summer Lovers, and several others.
What differentiates all these instances from Rick Ross’s “Santorini Greece” is the title, which is a direct reference to the island. Also, the clip is better directed than Bieber’s video, putting a deeper emphasis on the beauty of the island.
While publicity for the island is likely to increase the influx of tourists, locals fear that Santorini has reached saturation point. Nevertheless, publicity like this may boost winter tourism, which is beneficial for the local economy.
